I Wish Blogs Weren’t New

August 2, 2007 ·

A few days ago, my grandma wrote me an email asking me how she could find my sister’s “blog.” I’m always impressed at how my grandma has been learning new technology. (Though I did smile a bit because she couldn’t just say blog. It had to be “blog” in quotations. Like it’s not a real word.)

Anyhow, it got me thinking how interesting it would be if blogs were started 50 years ago and we could look back at what our parents and grand-parents wrote about on their blogs. I understand that quite a few parents and grandparents did write in journals, but so many times those are lost and forgotten. A blog is cached in so many places almost immediately after posting. So, be careful what you write.

Right now, it’s fun to go back a few years and see what I wrote at that time. I think it will be a blast for my kids and grandkids to go into the internet archives and read posts that Grandpa Brian wrote way back in 2007.

So in case that happens…”Hi to all you young whippersnappers. You have the coolest grandpa in the world.”

Your grandma deserves major kudos! This whole ‘blog thing is, still, new to me and I’m 21. I do agree with you, though. When my dad was alive, I don’t think ‘blogs were popular, back then, but my dad did have an e-mail address and it would have been amazing to have read all of his incoming and outgoing messages. My more tech-savvy friends coaxed me into creating a ‘blog only weeks ago, but I didn’t update it ’til I read your “What I Carry” post and checked out the photos in the Flickr group. My fiancĂ© suggested I only list the items due to the risk of identity theft, though. I don’t understand how guys can carry so very little!

I didn’t think I would be good at blogging since I’m not that great with words, but that is the nice thing about them. You just write down like it’s a journal and it becomes so much more fun the more you do it.

You bring up an interesting point…But just imagine what will be around in 30 more years that our children wii be doing on the computer and they’ll look back and think that “blogs” was really dinosaur. You are hilarious though!
