Seven Observations

November 7, 2007 ·

Every once and a while a blogger just needs to throw up a post of random thoughts. None of these are worthy of posts on their own, but maybe they are interesting enough collectively.

  • I always get a little nervous when I pull onto a city highway and don’t see any cars behind me or before the next bend in the road. This happens sometimes on I-95 at Charleston even in the middle of the day. Each time, I catch myself wondering what everyone else knows that I don’t.
  • There are few things more enjoyable than watching a baby right on the verge of sleep. When I get to rock Cole to sleep, I love watching his eyes fight sleep until they finally succumb.
  • I wish I didn’t like Sheryl Crow as much as I do. I don’t usually get into that kind of music, but that lady can jam.
  • There is no group of people that I collectively despise more than the TSA. If it wasn’t for one buddy of mine that is a bag scanner, I think it’d be upgraded to hatred. I haven’t lost my temper in years and years, but each time I go thru the airport security I can hardly contain myself. They illustrate that “it is the nature and disposition of almost all men (and women), as soon as they get a little authority, as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise unrighteous dominion.” There is certainly a better way. San Francisco has a private company do security and it is a wonderful relief to travel there.
  • I believe that habitual tardiness is an external sign of a much larger internal problem. It will have an affect on how you run much of your life.
  • I have a strange habit of picking up on too-often used phrases. I’ve written before about this but I have another one. How come everyone starts their food orders with , “Can I get a…?” Next time you’re at an eating establishment, listen to others when they order. I don’t know why it’s so wide-spread. I prefer, “I’ll have…” After all, you are giving an order, not begging.
  • Did you know that the sheer size of Jupiter protects Earth regularly? The gravitational pull is so strong that it pulls in asteroids and comments that might otherwise make it further into the solar system and endanger us? This fact makes me feel small, but important. Tonight in your prayers, throw a little gratitude up for Jupiter.

Alright, I think I got all the little tidbits out of my system.

    1) Since you told me about the “Can I get a…” a while ago, I have noticed it every time I go out to eat. Why do you do this to me??
    2) Sheryl Crow is one of my favorites. I never really liked her music until I let all her songs play one day. You’re right, she can jam.
    3) The word “Jupiter” reminds me of Bry-Bry during yours and Jarrett’s pancake man video. Good times.

It is hard to not be annoyed with the use of too-often used phrases, but one of the worse offenders is at church and especially at sacrament meeting. Everyone knows you can go from one ward to the next and never skip a beat on almost how exact each one is–almost right down to the words and the too-often used phrases. How many times do you hear: “We would like to thank the Aaronic Priesthood for the reverent manner in which they passed the sacrament.” I mean, I have even said it myself. But why not just thank them instead of saying that you want to thank them? Why not say: “Thank you Aaronic Priesthood.” But it is not a bad phrase, just as most too-often phrases are not bad words. In fact, I try really hard to resist getting annoyed with the use of the phrases because it really can be distracting; it is easy for it to be too distracting to the point it becomes a disability–I know people like that. Besides, there can’t be anything really wrong with repetition…if there was, our temple experiences would be in big trouble. Why else did Moroni repeat over and over four times in a row everything to Joseph Smith? It is a slightly different topic, but repetition can be a really good thing.

I’ll remember Jupiter in my prayers tonight. Your post made me want to have an interview with you.

I’m not surprised, but you know Jarrett? How many people outside of our ‘family sphere’ do we know in common? I don’t know if that makes sense.

I also have strong feelings about being on time. It is rude to make others wait when a time has been set.

This morning, there was strangely little traffic on the way to the Bay Bridge, and then I remembered that Monday’s a holiday for some people… I did get the same thoughts about everyone knowing something I didn’t, though.

Also, this has become one of my new favorite blogs to read. We really miss you at LITO! Best to you and yours.

Joss, getting that feeling on a bridge would be twice as eery.

Thanks for the compliment on the blog and keeping LITO rolling. I check in often there and see what’s going on. It seems that things are rolling along.

Jayci, Jarrett was a step brother of mine for years. Would you like me to list down every person I’ve known since five years old so you don’t have to continue getting these surprise connections?

First of all I can not stand the airport security people. They are so stinkin rude and they don’t even care that they are!
Secondly, it dirves me up the wall when people are late. I am a very “on time person” but Chad on the other hand has the additude that whenever we get there is when we get there. It drives me crazy!!!

Have I told you how fun it is to read your blog? Prety fun. So what do you think it says about a person when they are always late? (Ummm, my friend wants to know…)

    Here’s a “comment” pulled in by Jupiter’s gravity :)

Jerry, nice catch. I hadn’t noticed it until now…but I’ll keep it in there for the sake of the joke.
