This Beautiful World

This Beautiful World

Earlier this year, I completed a goal of traveling to all fifty states in the USA. I admit that some states were more interesting than others, but America is full of wonderful people and places. Seeing the homes and highways across America is a good reminder that we all have more in common than we have differences

So now it’s on to the next travel goal: travel in one direction around the whole world.

For those interested, here is the travel map:

I am excited to return to some places like Japan and Bolivia. I’m looking forward to seeing some new places like New Zealand and Kuala Lumpur.

And even better, Candace and the kids are coming as well.

We’ve taken care of all the essential things like tickets, visas, and immunizations. We have trusted people living in our home to care for it and the schooling is all lined up.

A few noteworthy things

The circumference of the Earth is 24,000 miles. Our adventure will be 36,000 miles. This total is assuming that everything goes as planned and I remain humble enough to ask for directions when lost. If we tack on an extra 500 miles, you’ll know why.

Since we are traveling in one direction, we will lose a day and never gain it back. I may have told the younger kids that this means we will need to adjust their birthday by one day in the years going forward. I will clarify this for them at some point. Probably.

We’ve chosen mostly Southern Hemisphere destinations. This means Summer will be in full force for the majority of 2024. Boo humidity.

AI depicting a dad in humidity. Looks accurate.

Why share this now?

Historically, I keep travel adventures recorded in my personal journal only. I would share some reports in talks and presentations from time to time, but that was about it.

But also, for twenty years the name of this blog has been “Live a Story to Tell.” I shouldn’t be so selfish.

When told right, a story can be informative and entertaining without being boastful. This is part of the reason I’ve started the “Notes From” series on the blog. If I can help educate and inspire/quench a little wanderlust in friends and family, perhaps that can be a good thing.

I plan to write about the different locations as we go. I hope to show some nice photos, offer thorough food reports, and perhaps make this world a little smaller for all of us.

I hope that you will receive the upcoming blog posts in this light. If you’d like to receive the posts straight to your inbox, you can enter your email at the bottom of this post.
